Letter from Sarah Christian O'Dowd

It sounds very exciting indeed--quite a change from academia. I am very happy in retirement, so far. I've been so busy that I can't imagine how I could go back to work. (In fact, I will probably teach one course in summer school this year, just to keep my hand in.) A senior center in Cranston wants me to give a talk there in May (I don't know exactly what I'll say--may call the talk "Successful Aging" and give them some of the latest results of the Centenarian Study, which I think is directed by a psychologist called Poon in Atlanta--will have to look into this later.) This Saturday I'm speaking at Barnes & Noble in Warwick, RI, about the chapter I wrote for "R.I. Women Speak." I have done more research on Frances Whipple so I can add a bit to my old talk. I do wish I could finish that project, but there are still several stones I have to turn over, so to speak. One is a trip to California, to look into the 20 years she spent in the Bay area. My son Chris is in SF now (I assume, though he was longing to be back in Chicago as soon as he'd moved away from it), so I could visit him there. I had been thinking of making this trip toward the end of April, which is one reason why I have been so indefinite in response to Eden's news that you all are coming to this region April 19-23. Another trip, more immediately, will begin next week: I am going to be in Venice, Fla. from March 7 to April 6. I promised Eden that I would call her when I get back to Barrington. I do hope we can all get together.         Let me know the news on the job front! Sarah
