Shirley R Phillips"    Sun, Aug 6, 2000, I don't know how much of an expert I am but I have been collecting first lady dolls for sometime. I have all 12 of the Brinn's doll

shirley.r.phillips@gte.net (Shirley R Phillips) Sun, Aug 6, 2000,

There were the first 12 first ladies by Brinn's sold on Home Shopping. There dresses are supposed to be replicas of the actual dresses worn at the inauguration. All these have hair. I also have Bess Truman and Mamie Eisenhower with molded hair and these are from The First Lady collection which I also bought from Home Shopping.

I just got Grace Coolidge with molded hair and looked all over the box and cannot find who made her. It may or may not be Brinn's. There were 6 put out by the Danbury Mint and they have replicas of the gowns worn to the inauguration. These are Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, Lady Bird Johnson, Rosalyn Carter, Betty Ford and Barbara Bush. These are my favorites. However they cost about $200 new so any you can get especially if cheaper -grab them. I have Eleanor Roosevelt made by Effanbee. I love her. I really like the presidents put out by Effanbee also. I've noticed Madam Alexander put out first ladies as well and there dresses are supposed to be replicas also. I'm not crazy about these and they are expensive. I may end up buying one if thats all I can find of certain first ladies. I have 4 coming from the Smithsonian collection buy haven't received them ye

shirley.r.phillips@gte.net (Shirley R Phillips Wed, Aug 9, 2000,

RLaverdier@aol.com Date: Fri, Aug 11, 2000,

Suzanne Gibson made a series of ten First Ladies dolls over 15 years ago. I got eight of them at that time, and have not been able to find the other two until one of them came on eBay two weeks ago. I told the seller of that doll my story and she emailed me about the Lucretia Garfield being on eBay on the same day that the auction ended.

I'm sorry I outbid you, but this was the final piece of my collection. I have them on a separate shelf in a glass-fronted doll cabinet, along with the Franklin Mint Jackie Kennedy bride doll and the Jackie Kennedy Franklin Mint vinyl dress-up doll in the inauguration suit with sable trim.

I've got several books about the First ladies displayed as well that I got at the Smithsonian when I visited there a few years ago.

These are my only first ladies. I loved the Suzanne Gibson ones because the faces are very generic; however, the costuming is beautifully detailed and the hair is a perfect match to any photos or pictures of the "ladies" at that time.

Good luck with your collection. I promise you that I'm done with the Suzanne Gibson - if the opportunity comes up on the Abigail Van Buren or Lucretia Garfield - grab it. Those have been the hardest to find.

The bride doll (Johnson?) is the best gown (it's not inaugural, but her wedding gown).

Have fun. Rosemary
