I just got a message from some guy named Jim Roach who has been trying to contact her about some of the Christian and allied families, but he says here old e-mail address is not working. I tried the telephone number I had for her -- 404-523-6969 - but that turned out to be a fax number. I'm just trying to get in touch with her for this fellow -- and also to remind her of our luncheon and hope that maybe she's getting time to look at her pictures (in hope she has a picture of my great-granddad, Elam Christian). Can you contact her and have her contact me? Thanks much. Jay Rogers in San Antonio, TX Here's the message he was trying to send her: Elizabeth, I have just found a post on GenForum you made Apr 1, 1999, subj: Re: WINTERS, Jeremiah, ENG>SC 1815. My wife, Milly, is descended from JAMES COOK WINTER & SAREPTA ANN GLENN. James Cook would have been a bro to Phebe. I think the reason I missed your post was that our house was hit by a tornado on Apr 3, 1999 in Benton, LA, doing about $40K worth of damage--we were lucky, neighbors on three sides were totally demolished. As a result, was off the internet for a number of months last year. But back to the E.C.B. CHRISTIAN line, below is all the information that I have been able to find thus far. I knew that Phebe died and Elisha remarried a "Tabitha" but have been unable to find more about her. If you can "fill-in" any of the blanks, would be most appreciative to hear from you. And, we would be happy to provide you with anything we have, either on JAMES COOK WINTER downward to Milly, or the ancestral path which includes mostly STOREY's û-beyond JEREMIAH WINTER, Sr. we have pretty much a blank. We also have exchanged info with Judy Sims. I do believe Elvira is the daughter of Jeremiah, but I don't know anything more than that. Do you have anything you could send me about the family? I don't even know Elvira's birthdate. I only know that her name was Elvira Winters. I didn't know her siblings or her parents. I was told that she was the daughter of Jeremiah Winters and that he was the son of Jeremiah Winters and that is all I know. I am assuming that Elvira stayed in GA when her daughter Martha Jane moved to AL. Martha Jane Hamilton m. Albert Lorenzo Johnston apparently in Picken's County, GA. Martha Jane and Albert had a son named Sidney Cylvanus Johnston who married Sarah Elizabeth Rowe, the daughter of Sam Rowe and Fannie Mount. Sarah and Sidney had a daughter named Ruby Beatrice Johnston. Ruby was my grandmother. She died almost one year ago at the age of 84. If you are interested, I could send you the names of Elvira's other children. I have a paper put together by Virginia Johnston Saint and the Johnston families in 1987 that gives the descendants of Martha Jane. Martha Jane is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetary in Scottsboro. The paper says she remarried, but her tombstone says Johnston. Her husband ALBERT disappeared. He said he was going to the store one day and he never returned, leaving her alone with a houseful of children. Some say he was killed, some say he started over with a new family someplace else. I do not know what happened to him. It is very interesting to me that the family was in the newspaper business. As a child, I so much wanted to be a journalist. I LOVED to write. Mostly poetry. Though I did win an essay contest in 8th grade. In the 11th grade I was accused of plagarism, and I was very hurt and stopped writing for a long time. Now I only write when I am emotional, but I always wondered where I got such a trait from as no one else in my family has much interest in writing. My brother writes very well, however, and has had several songs published when he was living in San Diego. Right now, my main interest is being a mom, I have four children who are everything to me. That is why I have taken so long to return your email. Please forgive the lapse. Have a wonderful day, and anything you could share about Elvira and her family and parents, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Maggie ----- Original Message ----- From: Elizabeth Christian To: Maggie Sent: Thursday, May 18, 2000 5:29 AM Subject: Re: Winters Family Mrs. Sims answered me and said that your connections may be correct. The name Elvira is not that common a name, is it ? If Elvira is the daughter of Jeremiah then she would be Phebe's sister who was my great great grandmother. Phebe married E.C.B. (Elisha Clement Bennett) Christian and they moved from South Carolina to north Georgia. They were Methodists and also sent at least one son, maybe more to apprentice in the newspaper business and my great grandfather Elam Christian was both a Methodist minister and started many newspapers in cities around the state after the Civil War. My grandfather, William Henry Christian sr. worked at the Atlanta Journal for over 50 years..in the same building in the end where my own daughter now copy edits, and also draws a Atlanta Journal Constitution paycheck....my fahter was William Henry Christian jr, a physician with a rather varier career, who lived 1903 - 1975. Should you want to come to Atlanta to do any work at our archives, if you think there may be anything there let me know. Best wishes, Elizabeth

I haven't been able to do much research since I last sent her info due to a death in the family. I told her that I believe this Elivira is the daughter of Jeremiah Jr. because a girl named Elvira Winters married William L. Hamilton in 1867 in Pickens Co., GA and that is where Jeremiah Jr. and family were living at the time. Also, there is a possibility that whoever copied the marriage record could have misread the middle initial. He could have been William J. instead of William L. I don't want to send this lady all my info and then she doesn't do any research herself. I think that may be what she is doing. I gave her information and where to look for documentation. I do think she may be related but she hasn't sent me very much concerning her line. Judy Elizabeth Christian wrote: I just got this email and wonder if you can help this lady. Do you think she might be related ? Am no closer to doing anything on geneology than before. Work seems to be getting more and more absorbing. I will be going to the American Library Association meeting in July and expect to precede that with a trip to Michigan, camping with my daughter and her going on six year old twins.
