GREECE

This charming doll came from a large estate with a huge collection of international dolls collected over many years of European travels. He has a painted cloth face. He stands a little over 7 inches tall. His hands are plastic but I am unsure of what his body is made. He wears a traditional Greek costume. Mint condition...clearly never played with. dvdet@aol.com Vick Detwiler 296 SuddenValley Bellingham WA 98226 9.55 w s/h

HONG KONG

Adorable little oriental baby/toddler doll, approx. 12 inches tall. This little doll (I'm not sure if its a boy or a girl) has painted black hair and painted blue eyes, and is vinyl. I don't know who made the doll, but it says Hong Kong on the back. Doll is used but is in good condition.

ITALY

A beautiful 19 inch doll from Italy that is marked on her back "35 Italy Z.Z." She has beautiful long platinum blonde hair, bright blue sleep eyes, pale pink lips and is in great shape. She wears a cotton blue and white dress with a red lace underslip and white slip also. She has on thigh high cotton stockings, rubber blue shoes and a white hat with blue ribbon. The hat needs a little TLC. I don't know if the outfit is original, but it is nice. dollbiz@dollbiz.com Wendy Peniak 1105 Appleton Lane Geneva IL 60134 14.29 w. s/h

New Zealand I purchased my Maori doll at the monthly sale in the former St. Peter's next door to the Cathedral in Hamilton. The lady said that she had purchased it herself at a flea market. I paid 5.00 NZ for it. I got this information about another Maori doll and an answer to the question about these plastic dolls dressed overseas, but sold by US companies Message From: HBcoop@aol.com Date: Sun, Aug 13, 2000, 11:46am To: echristian@webtv.net I have had a doll dressed as a Maori boy from New Zealand and yes, it is similar to the Masai doll but a bit different. The Maori people generally have facial tattooing and their clothing was made of many quills and feathers. The bead work and the color of my doll's loincloth are usually attributed to the Masai people. This doll looks very much like other composition dolls that were made in the USA in the 1930's and sold to many different companies. I believe it was quite common for the dolls to be supplied to the different African tribal peoples to be dressed by the women of the tribes for the tourist trade. I wish there were more books on this subject, but there has been little written on the International dolls. I even had to go to the library and research ethnic costuming to find out where a doll may have come from. There is one good reference book on International dolls called "Folk and Foreign Costume Dolls" by Linda Jean Frame by Collector Books, PO Box 3009, Paducah, Kentucky 42001. Gayle Poland Unique pair of very old Polish dancing dolls - mounted on wooden stand - and they can be posed in many ways. Darling facial expressions - looks as though they're really in love! Light soil and age wear, but they display well. Great costumes brdnbtr@hotmail.com Gay Hipsley 830 Peregrine Dr Indiatlantic Florida 12.55 w s/h

Russian An authentic 8" Russian doll. She has a veil over hear braided black hair. She is wearing a traditional costume. Her body and face is made of plastic. It was sent to me by a Russian friend a few years back and due to a recent move, I must sell it. It is in very good condition. italialu@aol.com

THIS PAIR OF RUSSIAN (?) FOLK DANCERS ARE IN ROUGH SHAPE. THEIR BODIES FEEL LIKE MOSTLY WIRE FRAMES WITH VARIOUS CLOTHS & YARNS WRAPPED AROUND THEIR LIMBS. THEY'RE WEARING SOME TYPE OF SKIN MOCASSINS. CLOTHES ARE A MIXTURE OF LINEN(?), BURLAP(?) & WHAT LOOKS LIKE ACE BANDAGES ON THE MALE'S LEGS. HIS HEAD IS VERY LOOSE & HERS ISN'T FAR BEHIND. THE HOLEY SHIRTS HAVE EMBROIDERY ON THE CHESTS. SOMEONE WENT TO A LOT OF TROUBLE TO MAKE THESE DOLLS. JUNK OR TREASURE????? Correspondence about the doll

I was hoping you could tell me. My sister bought them at an auction 10 to 12 years ago. They were in a lot that had Russian religious icons (which she still has) marked USSR on the back. So, we assume that they came from that part of the world. I think the man's head covering is a clue. My sister was anxious to know if you had any idea as to what they are. It amazes me how some items travel around the world....to Rhode Island... and now to you. Hope you find out something about them. Good luck with your collection, Brenda
